With a population of 66,280,000,Hunan,traditionally called“Xiang”for short,covers a total area of over 210,000 square kilometers.The major ethnic groups living in the province are the Hans,the Tujias,the Miaos,the Dongs,the Yaos,the Huis,the Uigurs and the  Zhuangs.Surrounded by high mountains to its east,south and west,it is largely low-lying and hilly in its central part,with the Dongting Lake Plain in its north.Hunan has a humid subtropical monsoon climate,with humid summers,cold winters and abundant rainfall.Noted for its famed mountains,rivers and great personages,it boasts its tourism resources.Six railway lines(the Beijing-Guangzhou,the Jiaozuo-Liuzhou,the Zhejiang-Jiangxi,the Hunan-Guizhou,the Hunan-Guangxi and the Shimen-Changsha)run through the province,making it easy of approach.The province is crisscrossed by roads and expressways.There are four airport in the province(Changsha Airport,Zhangjiajie Airport,Changde Airport and Yongzhou Airport).Among the traditional arts and handicrafts are Hunan embroidery in Changsha,Liuyang fireworks and crackers,bamboo weavings in Yiyang and Shaoyang,Liling porcelain and chrysanthemum stone carvings in Liuyang.
In Hunan province,Hunan Provincial Tourism Bureau and Tourism administrations of municipal,prefectural and lower levels are responsible for the tourism management.
